Cave Creek BBQ School: Cultivating Hands-On Life Skills

Cave Creek BBQ School

N Smokehouse Trail & Tanglewood Trail, Cave Creek, AZ 85331

Is your student interested in cooking? We sat down with Mick, founder of Cave Creek BBQ School, to get the low-down on the amazing classes he offers.

Q: How did Cave Creek BBQ School get started?

A: Mick started washing dishes in a restaurant at 15 years old! He worked hard in the restaurant business until moving to Ireland, where he introduced American low n’ slow barbecue cooking. The Irish loved this new style of cooking and BBQ really took off there. Mick relocated to Arizona from Chicagoland where he was hand picked by Sweet Baby Ray to be Pitmaster and General Manager of his only barbecue restaurant. Mick now owns Cave Creek BBQ School and enjoys sharing his passion for BBQ with others.

Q: What class should students sign up for?

A: The first class students should sign up for is definitely the BBQ Master Class. This class generally runs on Sundays but if you have a group that would like to register you can sign up for other days of the week. Students must be aged 12 years old or older as they will have to sit through the lesson and be safe around hot grills, etc.

Groups must have a minimum of 6 people and maximum of 16 people. Please be aware that if you sign up individually you will be put in whatever group is running that Sunday. The restaurant does not serve alcohol but guests are welcome to bring their own drinks.

Q: What can students expect?

A: Students can expect a 4 hour class covering cooking with various types of fuel such as gas, charcoal, and wood. Mick will cover when to use different BBQ techniques, how to use them, and he will demonstrate grilling various types of meat using different cookers. At the end of the class, students will enjoy the freshly prepared food! Learn how to BBQ from a professional and enjoy the experience!

In case families wish to make a trip out of the experience, there are eclectic shops in downtown Cave Creek to visit, a recreation area, hiking trails, picnicking areas, and a YMCA with activities.

After taking the BBQ Master Class there are others to choose from: Low n' Slow-Let's Smoke to Sonoran Specialties-A Mexican Fiesta. So, get your student signed up for Cave Creek BBQ if they are interested in developing their culinary skills!
